How Do I Prepare for Breast Augmentation?

To prepare for your Breast Augmentation surgery at the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute, please read the following instructions. It is also important that you familiarize yourself with the various aspects of the recovery phase after your surgery and ensure that there is someone who can stay with you for the first 24 hours.

If you need clarification on any of the following instructions, or you have a question that is not answered by the information below, please contact us and one of our staff will be ready to help you.

Two (2) Weeks Before Breast Augmentation Surgery:

  1. Stop all blood thinner medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, advil, coumadin, warfarin, plavix) and supplements (omega-3, fish oil, garlic, vitamin E).
  2. Stop smoking (even a single cigarette can have an adverse effect on your recovery and overall outcome of your augmentation surgery). Cigarettes contain nicotine and carbon monoxide, amongst a list of many poisonous substances. Carbon monoxide prevents oxygen from being delivered to your cells, and therefore suffocates healthy, healing tissues while you are trying to recover from your surgery. Nicotine is a substance that causes your blood vessels to constrict, thus making it more difficult for your body to deliver blood, oxygen and nutrients to the healing breast wounds. These effects slow down healing and make you more susceptible to infection, wound breakdown, and many other complications after surgery.
  3. If Dr. Jugenburg requested that you have any tests performed prior to your surgery, you should have all your blood work and test results done and forwarded to the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute for review no later than 2 weeks prior to your surgery.
  4. Make arrangements for transportation to and from the surgery.
  5. Make arrangements if you need someone to look after your children on the day of your surgery (e.g., pick up from school).
  6. All payments for the surgery should be completed now.

One (1) week Before Breast Augmentation Surgery:

  1. Pick up your prescription (as given to you by Dr. Jugenburg) from your pharmacy.
  2. Stop drinking alcohol.
  3. Please let us know if you have a cold or any other infections, as they will need to be treated and resolved before your augmentation surgery.

One (1) Day Before Breast Augmentation Surgery:

  1. Prepare loose clothing to wear to the clinic and/or to change into after surgery. You do not need to bring a bra to wear after your surgery, as a sports bra or a surgical bra will be given to you.
  2. Prepare a small recovery pack to bring to the clinic containing important items, so that you do not have to worry about these after your surgery. This pack might include a water bottle, simple dry snacks, ID (e.g., driver’s license), some cash and a credit card, for example.
  3. Continue taking all medication that is prescribed to you, except for blood thinners (if unsure, please consult with our nurses or Dr. Jugenburg).
  4. Have nothing to eat or drink, including water, after midnight before your surgery. You must not have anything in your stomach for at least 8 hours prior to your surgery (you can have small sips of water with medications).

Day of the Breast Augmentation Surgery

  1. Take a shower, and wash using basic soap and water. There is no need for any special  cleansing soaps or shampoos.
  2. If you are having Breast Augmentation through the armpit (Trans-Axillary), please shave your armpits (if unshaven).
  3. Do not apply any body lotion or antiperspirant.
  4. You can brush your teeth, but do not drink any water (with the exception of small sips of water with medications).
  5. Do not take any diabetic medication.
  6. Do take your blood pressure medication if you are prescribed any.
  7. Bring all your medications (including those Dr. Jugenburg has prescribed for you) to the Royal York Hotel surgery facility. (If your surgery is instead taking place at the Humber River Regional Hospital, you do not need to bring these medications with you as we have a different protocol at the hospital.
  8. Arrive at our facility two hours prior to your scheduled surgery time to allow our nurses to check you in, give you any medication that may be required, and to allow you to relax in our pre-surgical room.

Your Scheduled Time of Surgery

your_scheduled_time_of_Surgery

On the day of your procedure, you will arrive 2 hours before the scheduled time of surgery. The exact time of your surgery will be determined a few days prior; although we roughly know the schedule for that day weeks ahead of time, we sometimes have to re-arrange the schedule to accommodate the needs of different patients.

Patients with type 2 diabetes, for example, are operated on first to allow for better blood sugar control. (please note we do not accept type1 diabetics) Regardless of when your surgery is tentatively scheduled for, plan on taking the entire day off. If, for example, your surgery is scheduled in the afternoon, do not attempt to do anything in the morning, just try to relax.

Preparing for Your Recovery After Surgery

Content-page-13-(1)Since Breast Augmentation is an outpatient surgical procedure, following your surgery you will be released to either go home or to recover in one of our luxurious hotel rooms in the Fairmont Royal York Hotel (at no extra charge). Whether you go home or stay in the hotel, you will need to have a capable adult stay with you for the first 24 hours. You cannot be left alone during the first night after your surgery, and more importantly, you should not be walking without assistance during the first 24 hours.

During this time, you may be prone to fainting, falling, and hurting yourself. In the event that you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, you must also wake up your companion. You are not allowed to go to the bathroom by yourself during the first night after your surgery.

If you are unable to find anyone that can stay with you, we are able to provide you with a Personal Support Worker who will make sure you are safe and comfortable. There is an additional $400 fee for this service.

Important preparation for your recovery from Breast Augmentation surgery:

  1. Organize your affairs and schedule, so that you can completely relax and rest after surgery.
  2. Make sure you arrange for someone to bring you to the clinic and to collect you after the surgery – you will not be allowed to leave by yourself.
  3. Make sure you have someone who can spend the first 24 hours after the surgery with you, to ensure your safety – you must not be left alone.
