You’re looking towards getting a breast implant. Given the impact this procedure can have, it's only natural to wonder: how long do breast implants last?
There is no predetermined time frame for breast implants. They don’t “expire,” but also do not last forever. They can last for around 10-20 years with up to 20% of patients removing or replacing their implants within 10 years. Replacements are needed when there are issues or complications.
Many patients seek a specific answer—a definitive date to note on their calendars. However, the reality is more nuanced. The lifespan of breast implants varies based on several individual factors, such as the type of implant (some implants have thicker shells than others, however the impact on longevity is negligible), the expertise of your plastic surgeon, and the impact of natural wear and tear over time.
According to the FDA, breast implants aren't meant to last a lifetime. However, In numerous instances, breast implants can maintain their integrity for 20 years or longer. It is important to note that every individual is unique, and the lifespan of your implants will be influenced by your body and how well you care for them.
If everything goes smoothly without any trauma or complications to the breast, you can expect your implants to last at least ten years.. Based on what we've seen, implants can easily last 10-15 years, while many of our patients can have them for 20-25 years. However, some patients feel more comfortable exchanging them for new ones after 10+ years. This can account for up to 20 percent of patients.
There are various reasons why your implants, whether for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes, may fail. Often, it happens due to the natural wear and tear on the implants or direct trauma.
Modern implants are engineered to endure beyond a decade, but there's a one percent annual increase in the likelihood of rupture. Whether your implant contains silicone or saline solution, its outer surface is typically made of sturdy silicone elastomer (solid form of silicone). While designed to withstand significant pressure and heat, it's still susceptible to breakage or puncture. Therefore, the longer you have your implants, the higher the risk of rupture or other issues.
The general rule of thumb is that the risk of rupture is 1% per year, thus after 10 years it is 10%, after 20 years it is 20%.
Capsular contracture known as "breast hardening," involves the development of hardened scar tissue around one or both implants, leading to tightness, pain, tenderness, and noticeable cosmetic changes in the breast. It is often mistaken for simply ‘hard breasts’ when patients don’t realize that the hardness of their implants is not normal. It is the result of the contracture of the scar tissue around the implant, and can lead to breast pain, asymmetry, numbness, firmness, tenderness, a rounded appearance as well as noticeable cosmetic changes in the breast. In some cases, capsular contracture may occur multiple times in the same breast.
A saline breast implant may rupture due to a tear or hole in the implant's shell. When a saline implant ruptures, the saline solution is safely absorbed into the breast tissue, although it can lead to a quick deflation of the breast tissue resembling a deflated balloon. Though rare in the initial years, the risk of rupture increases over time. If a patient notices that one of her implants has lost volume, she should arrange to see your surgeon immediately.
Similar to saline implants, silicone implants can also rupture. However, silicone gel is denser or thicker than saline. Detecting rupture in silicone implants can be more challenging, as the gel would leak into the implant capsule only (the scar tissue that surrounds the implant). When a silicone breast implant ruptures, the thick silicone gel inside may leak out, causing changes in breast size or shape.
When a silicone breast implant ruptures, it is much harder to detect than a saline implant rupture because the appearance of the breast often remains unchanged, a process known as silent rupture. Symptoms, when present, may include altered breast shape, lumps, tenderness, or changes in breast sensation or the formation of capsular contracture. It is estimated that the rate of silicone rupture falls within the range of 2 to 12 percent. Regular monitoring and medical evaluation are crucial for detecting and addressing silicone implant ruptures. The latest guidelines for silicone monitoring is to have Ultrasound or MRI screening 5 years after surgery and then every 2-3 years.
Rippling occurs when the implant develops wrinkles or ripples, with palpability referring to the ability to feel these changes upon touching the breast. In some cases, these alterations may also be visible through the skin, indicating a need for implant replacement or removal. Factors contributing to this include post-surgery weight loss, volume loss in saline implants, or the formation of scar tissue.
As time passes, breast tissue undergoes natural changes due to aging, pregnancy, weight fluctuations and hormonal fluctuations. Despite breast implants altering appearance, they do not stop the aging process. As you age, breast sagging may occur due to gravity. These changes can affect the appearance and feel of implants, necessitating periodic assessments and, in some cases, revisions. Significant weight changes can also contribute to position alterations, necessitating breast lift or implant replacement to restore desired appearance.
Before you decide to get implants, your plastic surgeon will talk to you about how to look after them and remind you about regular checkups to keep your implants in good shape for longer.
Monitoring your implants for changes and scheduling regular follow-ups with your surgeon are essential steps in ensuring their longevity and your continued satisfaction. It is an extremely important decision with lasting effects, so it's important to choose someone with the skill level to provide you with the best results possible.
