Summary
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure to restore the appearance of breasts after they have been lost, damaged, or removed due to cancer or other medical reasons. Breast reconstruction may be done to improve the symmetry of the breasts, correct deformities caused by medical conditions, or to correct problems such as lumps or scars.
Breast cancer can take a variety of forms, and each requires a unique set of treatments. Some women have a lumpectomy, which removes the tumour only. Others may need a mastectomy, which is the removal of the entire breast. After surgery, reconstruction can be done using tissue from the surrounding area. This surgery can be performed on a variety of levels, including reconstructing a full breast or section of breast, reconstructing a nipple, creating implants to support the breast, or some combination thereof. In cases of unilateral breast cancer, surgery may be recommended to remove only one affected breast. A breast lift, breast reduction or augmentation may be recommended to the opposite breast to improve symmetry. By restoring the physical appearance and function of the breasts, Reconstruction can bring immense relief and satisfaction to women who have suffered through mastectomies or other types of cancer-related breast surgery.
